Graduate students in the Department of Cellular Biology are engaged in exciting research from day one. They study the molecular biology of cells in experimental model systems that range from single cells to whole animals. The Department is home to many prominent research groups; please browse through the faculty pages for detail on individual laboratories. These laboratories are also part of large cross-university research initiatives in developmental biology, neuroscience and molecular parasitology.

Be at the forefront of modern biology research

graduate page image 3The Department of Cellular Biology occupies state-of-the-art research, teaching and office space on the UGA main campus. Our laboratories and programs are well funded through federal research grants (including NIH funding focused on graduate student training). Students have access to the latest developments in modern research equipment. As our research is focused on living cells this is particularly true for microscopy and flow cytometry.

Cellular Biology students can count on support

Students are guided by experienced investigators serving as mentors, thesis committee members, and colleagues. The goal of our training program is your development into a highly skilled and intellectually independent scientist. Beginning students receive a solid background through rigorous course work. Laboratory rotations provide hands-on training and the opportunity to chose a mentor. Once settled into a particular laboratory students focus on research and publication. The Department provides competitive financial support through a variety of assistantships and tuition is usually waived.

Live in the hippest college town in the country

graduate page image 4 Athens, GA is one of the hippest college towns around, and in 2009 was Kiplinger’s choice for the no. 5 Best City in the US. Athens is located 61 miles from downtown Atlanta making day trips to metropolis convenient and weekend getaways to the beach possible, but with so many possibilities of things to do in Athens, you may not make it out of town. Pubs, restaurants, and live music are all within walking distance of the UGA campus. Many famous musicians began their careers in Athens and the town continues to lead the way as the birthplace for future talent. Live music of any genre can be enjoyed every night of the week and Athens hosts its own music festival yearly. The moderate climate in Athens provides extended seasons to enjoy outdoor activities including biking and hiking in the scenic trails and parks in the area. Overall, Athens' rich environment of cultural and recreational activities as well as its low cost of living makes it a perfect place to live.

Hear from previous graduate students of the program:

Dr. James Morris (Associate Professor, Clemson University):

"As a Cellular Biology graduate student I discovered that the support of other people is key for success at the bench and in front of the classroom, a lesson that holds true for me today.”

Dr. Shipra Vaishnava (HHMI postdoctoral fellow UT South Western):

"The best things about my Cellular Biology graduate school days were the great group of people who share your goal and encourage you to do your best, the friends you make, and the community you become a part of while you are there.”
